NUU for Business Responds to FDA Alert on Missed Medical Alerts from Smartphones

    By NUU, April 15, 2025

Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public safety alert highlighting a critical risk: smartphone-connected diabetes devices—such as continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), insulin pumps, and automated insulin dosing systems—may fail to deliver or audibly notify users of life-saving alerts due to configurable phone settings.

The FDA has received multiple reports where patients did not receive or hear alerts, even when settings appeared correct. In some cases, this has led to severe medical outcomes such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, and even death.

Factors contributing to missed alerts include:

    • Use of “Do Not Disturb,” “Focus Mode,” or app “deep sleep”
    • Bluetooth accessories (e.g., car audio or headphones) altering alert behavior
    • Unsupported smartphone operating system updates

To protect patients, the FDA recommends closely monitoring app compatibility, alert configurations, and hardware changes. However, these risks persist in standard consumer smartphones, where settings can be unintentionally overridden or altered.

How NUU for Business Protects Mission-Critical Use Cases

At NUU for Business, we’ve engineered a direct and reliable solution. We create custom Android devices designed for mission-critical environments, especially diabetes devices, such as continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), insulin pumps and automated insulin dosing systems, that rely on a smartphone to deliver critical safety alerts.

    • System-level lockdown of settings like “Do Not Disturb” and battery optimization
    • Prevents alert-silencing modes from being activated or overriding app behavior
    • Ensures continuous, persistent delivery of critical notifications
    • Bluetooth pairing can be restricted through a customizable whitelist
    • Prevents unknown or unapproved accessories from altering device audio output or silencing alerts
    • Operating system updates are only pushed upon request by the device owner
    • All updates undergo validation testing to ensure compatibility with medical or critical applications before deployment
    • We eliminate the risk of accidental configuration changes by offering locked-down profiles that cannot be overridden by the user.

In high-stakes environments where every alert can mean the difference between life and death, NUU provides the assurance of constant, audible, and actionable notifications—always.

We believe reliability isn’t optional—it’s the foundation of trust in every device we build.
